Owl Helps

I like to plant the garden in a borders toward center. For example the outer boarder would have marigolds. The next border would have peppers. The inner layers would have beans and lettuce.

This helps keep the rabbits out of the center rings but the birds would still get in until the owl arrived.

When the real owl moved on, I brought in a plastic decoy. The decoy would work for a day or two, but I found if I relocated it at least every other day, it kept the birds away leaving more goodies for me.

Really works
by: Anonymous

I have used the owl before and it does work. To keep it working you need to move the owl around every couple weeks. If you don't move it birds or other small animals will become used to it being at the same place. I also have tried the aluminum pie pan they work great. Punch a hole in the pan tieon a string and hangit off a stickin the ground. The wind will blow and move the pan. Try putting two on the post and it creates a little more noise.

Pretty Garden Borders
by: Anonymous

Your owl tip is a good one, and really does work as long as you keep moving the owl around. I also like how you plot your garden. Planting things in borders, from the outside in, must make your garden really pretty and interesting. I'll try it!

Great tip!

Great tip - I have tried this before. I have also used the metallic "paper" type owl decoys that flap in the wind. They work as well!

You really must remember to move the plastic owl often or don't even bother with it.
