If you plant the whole pot with the geraniums, it is easier to remove them at the end of the season. Just cut them back and put inside- sunny location! You can replant them outside next season.

My geraniums have lasted several years because I planted them in pots. They get a little sad in the winter, but perk up my deck a lot in the summer, without the added expense of buying extra plants.
This also works great with herb plants, especially rosemary.
