Recycling newspaper in the garden

by Teri
(Iowa)

I collect my news paper through out the winter months so I will be ready for the spring and summer. As soon as it is warm enough to work outside I rake any remaining mulch away from the plants in my flower garden, cover the groudn with a thick layer of newspaper, and then cover the paper with the raked mulch and some new mulch for the season. I haven't had to weed my garden or use any weed killer.

In my vegetable garden I use newspaper to help keep down the weeds also. i again lay a thick layer down and hold it down with a little dirt.

Barbara Kingsolver does the same thing when she goes away on vacation - mentioned it in her book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Newspaper mulch

I have tried this method before, but I shredded the newspaper so it would decompose more quickly. I think it is an awesome way to recycle and feed your soil at the same time, after all, newspaper is carbon based and all plants need some carbon.

Great Way To Recycle
by: Anonymous

This seems like a great way to get rid of old newspapers. I'm not sure I would want to keep that many newspapers around my house though. However the idea of never having to buy another spray to keep my weeds away is very inticing.

A Green Idea
by: Anonymous

I think this is a really great way to recycle and be more green in the garden. I wonder though how often you would have to replace the newspaper? Otherwise, I think that it's a great way to not use chemicals in your garden.
