Adding Tea bags to garden soil

by Debbie
(Saint Petersburg, FL)

I add my used tea bags to my garden soil. I open the tea bag and mix it in the soil or spread it around my plants.

This helps build up the soil by adding nutrients and other natural nature friendly chemicals to your soil.

Green Tea
by: RoyBresee

Years ago somebody started using the slang term "green tea" to describe a slurry they made to add nitrogen to their gardens and fields. The contents of the slurry are described on my web-site www.breseeds.ca under tip and tricks - Green tea. Since then, I think there has been a misconception as to what gardener's "green tea" is. As to the use of (household) tea bags for fertilizer, I've never tried it, because I can't source enough for my market garden.

Tea

I use tealeaves to start dahlia seeds in, they are supposed to be acidic. Also remember the bag contains plastic, very bad ecologically.

Does it matter what kind of tea bags you use? I buy decaf Celestrial seasoning and a number of different kinds, sleepytime, tension tamer, candycane green tea etc

Are they all okay and is it better for certain kind of plants or soil type??? I have mostly sand outside but amend it with mushroom compost and peat.

I also have a berm I am creating along the road of sand I am digging out of a hole I am creating a pond. Can I use it with that as well? What nutrients does it add?

Also how are they if you put them in your vegetable garden or around fruit trees?

Tea bags for lemon trees
by: Helpful-Ideas.com

I have heard that the tea in the tea bags is good for lemon trees. They soak up the nitrogen. I'm going to try it today as my lemon trees are looking quite poorly here in Marbella.

and another use

Store your used, dried out bags in a jar. when it fills, add some paraffin and you have a jar of fire-lighters. They burn for ages and light the wood / charcoal easily.

Yet another way to reuse your tea bags
by: Anonymous

I agree that using tea bags as compost is a wonderful thing to do for your plants! I also "water" with tea that's gotten a little too old for my liking. Did you know that cooled wet tea bags also take the sting out of sunburn? So in between making tea & making compost, use them to cool your sun burn & get three different uses out of the same bag of tea!

Adding Tea bags to garden soil
by: bacall11

My Mother used to drink green tea 3x a day. She would save the tea bags, dry them out and empty the tea bags once a week. I still have some containers of dry tea that I am using for my inside plants as well as the plants outside. She didn't like black tea so I don't know how that works, but the green tea does wonders for insdoor plants. They perk right up, it's giving them vitamins. Excellent gardening tip.

What a great idea!

I have used coffee grounds for years, and water my plants with leftover coffee, but I never thought to also use the tea from the tea bags. We drink a lot of iced tea, so I'll be sure to use those, too!

I agree
by: Kris L.

This is a great tip. I now do this with my indoor potted herbs. A roomate of mine told me about the tip. It adds alot of nice enrichment. Do you use black and green tea? I was told only to use green tea because it had the proper nutrients.
