newspaper before mulch

by Lori

Before I spread the cedar mulch in my flower beds I lay about 10 layers of newspaper. This helps keep the nutrients in the ground and kills off the weeds that want to grow. It alos helps retain the moisture in the ground.

Newspaper and grass seed
by: Anonymous

Newspaper worked great for me when plating grass seed. I have lots of clay in my yard which makes growing grass a little tough, but last summer my husband and I used newspaper to plant new grass and it worked amazingly. First we spread a little top soil and covered it with newspaper. Then we spread grass seed and covered it with a little more top soil and watered (daily). The seed which we planted this way grew much better and faster than when planted the "old fashioned way".

Attracts worms too.

I have used this technique and adding the newspaper to your garden will attract earthworms as well. It is a great way to improve the quality of your soil.

Newsprint might stop bermuda grass
by: Anonymous

Newsprint might stop bermuda grass from invading your beds. Dr. Howard Garrett of www.dirtdoctor.com recommends layers of newspapers as weed block layer underneath rock gardens and mulched beds. According to him it is the only thing that will stop bermuda grass.

Newspapers and no-dig gardening
by: Anonymous

I've heard about using newspapers with or before mulch, but I've never done it myself. This tip reinforces what I've read before, so I think I'll start using newspapers in my gardening. In addition, I recently read about "no-dig" gardening, in which newsprint plays a large part, so I think I'll include a small plot for which I'll try the no-dig method.
