Dealing with black flies

by Sarah
(Massachusetts)

I live in Massachusetts where the black flies can really be a nuisance while I'm out gardening. A neighbor told me to put a dab of Vicks Vaporub behind my ears to keep the black flies from dive bombing my face. I tried it and it does work.

Sounds interesting

That definitely sounds worth a try - there's always a cloud of flies bothering me when I open the compost bin. I've also heard that taking a B vitamin supplement can repel biting insects, that definitely worked for us when the cat brought fleas home!

I will try it!

Being a dog groomer for years, I know that vaseline will keep flies from biting on the dogs ear's and nose's, but it didn't repel them. I will use this on myself, but do not recommened it for the animals.

Odd, but sounds like it would work

Well, rubbing Vicks Vapor rub behind your ears sounds pretty weird, but flies and other insects can really be a problem when you are gardening. So, I guess it would be worth a try.
